Like many residents, Katy was saddened to hear that Cadder Community Centre is threatened with closure by Glasgow’s Labour City Council. The Community Centre is virtually the only meeting place left for local groups within the area. If it closes, vital services such as the Ruchill Youth project will be moved as far away as Possilpark. Katy said:

“Last year, when we campaigned together to save St Agnes Primary School from closure, we hoped this would be the last time that Labour would ignore the wishes of local people.
Yet again, the council has presented a closure plan as a done deal, despite describing their letter to Cadder Community Council (informing them of the planned closure) as a ‘consultation’. We must do everything we can to show the Council that their decision is not acceptable.”

Katy and the parents of St Agnes Primary organised a timed walk on Tues 17th Feb to protest against the proposed closure of St Agnes Primary School in Cadder. The aim of the walk was to show the length of time it took for to get to the new school, even by the quickest route, and the dangers of the journey. The walk attracted significant media attention, with both Radio Clyde and Real Radio running the story in their news bulletins, GMTV filming the walk and local papers such as the Herald, Evening Times and Daily Record covering the event.

Katy said:

“I am delighted that the media took such an interest in our protest today. The parents and pupils of St Agnes sent a clear message today that they care deeply about the future of this school at the heart of their community. St Agnes should never have been included in the Labour City Council’s closure plans. Even on the council’s own criteria of low school rolls, St Agnes is way ahead. With a 66% occupancy, I defy anyone to describe that as a low school roll and it is by far and away the highest of all the threatened schools. What’s more, St Agnes currently has an average class size of 21. In the proposed merger with St Blane’s, this would rise to 25, according to the council’s own figures. This is hardly in keeping with the drive to reduce class sizes.

I call on Glasgow City Council to remove St Agnes from the closure programme and on the SNP to move quickly to restart the school building programme by releasing the promised funding stream they agreed to in the budget negotiations earlier this month.”
