Katy joined several hundred protesters in planting a flag in the area of the Botanic Gardens under threat of redevelopment if the plan to build a nightclub on the site by G1 Group goes ahead. While there have been indications in the press recently that G1 Group may abandon their plans for such a development, nothing is yet certain. So the Save our Botanics campaign organised today’s event to remind local residents and the media of the strength of opposition to the plans. Katy said:

I was very happy to stake my claim to this site as belonging to the people of Glasgow. The Botanics are an academic botanical institution with an international reputation and it would not be appropriate for a nightclub or any other large scale facility to be built on this site. Our Liberal Democrat councillors have been working hard to persuade the Labour council to recognise the strength of feeling on this issue and we are hopeful that this is bearing fruit. Glaswegians have given an emphatic thumbs down to the plans. What we need is a proper consultation on what should be done with the site (as should have happened in the first place) before any further moves are made to alter the current state of the area.

So Glasgow City Council have learnt nothing from the recent decimation of the leading Labour group’s councillors in the recent elections in May? They continue to act without consulting local people and are then surprised by the resultant furore. The latest is the uproar over granting a 99 year lease to the GI group for not only a cafe (which few would argue with) in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens, but also for a nightclub, playpark and redeveloped railway. The crazy thing is, that after the welcome failure of the supercasino bid due to lack of consultation, the railroading through of the private trust for Cultural & Leisure Services, that those whose job it is to approve leases thought it would be OK to approve such a controversial proposal without even consulting local groups. The first local councillors knew about it was by reading about it in the Herald. Lib Dem councillors Mary Paris and Kenneth Elder are spearheading the party’s fight to prevent this proposal from becoming reality, and Katy is supporting them to the hilt. The plans have been called in for scrutiny by another council committee, so the best thing any concerned members of the public can do is e mail Katy on this website with their concerns, or get in touch with Mary or Kenneth. The more local residents protest, the stronger our case will become.
