Katy recently attended the Glasgow Pride celebrations in George Square. Katy said:

I was glad to show my support to the Glasgow Pride. The Lib Dems have campaigned in support of LGBT issues, and it was fantastic to attend this vibrant and popular event.

Last weekend, Katy was invited to the official reception at the Friends of Old Station Park (FOSP) Gala day in Hyndland. The Chair of Hyndland Residents’ Association, Neil Johnston, highlighted the huge progress that’s been made in the last year, and that the money is now secured for Stage 1 of the project.
Katy said:

“I would like to congratulate FOSP for their achievements in the past year. Their hard work and commitment has really paid off, and I look forward to seeing the completion of Stage 1, in 2011.”

On another glorious June day, Katy opened the Friends of the River Kelvin (FORK) Gala, which  marks the traditional start to the West End Festival. This year the Gala was record breaking, with more stalls than ever before! In her speech Katy highlighted the importance of communities acting together to achieve results that benefit everyone.
Katy said:

“I was delighted to have been asked for the third year running to open the Gala day. Local organisations like FORK do a huge amount of work to improve the local area. It’s been heartening to see people rallying around a similar cause in the Save Otago Lane campaign. I hope the council will listen to the huge number of voices raised in protest.”

The developers have now submitted their plans to build 142 flats in 8 storey blocks along Otago Lane in the West End of Glasgow, effectively destroying the character of the lane and going against the council’s own City Plan.
We have already delivered around 700 letters of objection to the council – you can read about it in the Evening Times and the Herald.
If you haven’t written a letter of objection yet, please go to the Save Otago Lane website and follow the instructions to send in a letter of objection.  It is really important that you include the reasons why you are objecting – these must relate to the planning application.
It won’t take you more than 20 minutes to write a letter and you can even e mail it in to the council.  So please help us ensure that a little corner of a not so foreign field stays unspoiled.

The Liberal Democrat campaign focused on positive policies and the clear desire on the streets to have an MP who genuinely listens and takes up local campaigns. However, Labour succeeded on polling day in getting out enough voters to hold on in the seat.

Katy sends the following message to local supporters:

“Local Liberal Democrats and our supporters should be proud of the part they played in the campaign and view the increase in vote share as a good springboard for future elections.

I would like to thank the hundreds of members, supporters and volunteers who contributed to the campaign. I am proud of the team, and look forward to building on this result.

Commenting as he visited Kelvindale Post Office with Glasgow North candidate Katy Gordon, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP said:

“Katy Gordon fought alongside local residents to save Kelvindale Post Office when they were threatened with closure. “Scottish Labour MPs stood by and did nothing while the UK Government decimated our Post Office network.

“Her Labour opponent voted for the Post Office closure in Westminster, but then tried to campaign locally against it.

“People in Glasgow North will see right through this. They know that if they want a spirited local campaigner who will fight for fairness and work hard to secure jobs and clean up politics, then Liberal Democrat Katy Gordon is the only choice.”

Kelvindale’s Postmaster, Mr Mohammed added: “I think very highly of Katy. In my 38 years here, nobody has ever made more effort to help us and the community.”

Mr Gray, who has voted for the SNP in the past, has switched his support to the Liberal Democrats due to Ms Gordon’s strong track record of community campaigning.

Mr Gray joins Cllr Alex Dingwall in rejecting the SNP in favour of a party that can win in Glasgow North.

Commenting, Ms Gordon said:

“I’m delighted to have Alisdair’s support.

“He recognises that only the Liberal Democrats can beat Labour in Glasgow North.

“This is an invitation to all SNP supporters who want a hard working local champion to join with Alasdair and vote for the Liberal Democrats.

Alasdair Gray added:

“Katy Gordon will have my vote because there is a good chance of her defeating the Labour candidate, and the Labour Party is now thoroughly corrupted.

“As a community campaigner she has fought against plans to throw Otago Lane into the hands of property developers, and helped to save local post offices while Labour has stood by and done nothing.”

Glasgow North includes most of the West End, and the places you work, study and (the majority of you) live. With only 3338 votes required to win and 5000 students registered to vote it really is true that they really hold the key to winning in Glasgow North.

So for this reason our team packed their video camera and took to the streets around and inside Glasgow University to find out what students thought about the upcoming general election, and more importantly who do they support.

The results speak for themselves as many students see this as an opportunity to be fairly represented by someone who takes an interest in students and the issues that affect them directly.

It is so true that this particular constituency could by won by the votes from students. In order to have your say in who can represent you and the future generations living in Glasgow North best and take a stand on the issues voting for you, you only need do two things!

On Tuesday, former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy joined Katy at the ASDA supermarket in Maryhill, chatting to customers and staff about their views on the Lib Dems’ plans to make the tax system fairer.

Katy said:

“Liberal Democrat proposals to make the first £10,000 you earn tax free have been going down well on the doorsteps and customers I met today seemed impressed too.
The poorest people in Glasgow now pay a higher proportion of their income in tax than in 1997. Life has got harder for people at the bottom while it has got easier for those at the top.
This has happened on Labour’s watch. It is a damning indictment that after thirteen years in Government Labour has not delivered fair taxes.”

Commenting, Charles Kennedy added:

“Katy has worked tirelessly for Glasgow North, battling against Labour’s programme of post office closures and school closures. As the local MP, Katy will continue to campaign on the issues that matter to people in Glasgow.
The fact that so many people recognised her and wanted to come over and say ‘hello’ just goes to show how close she is to beating Labour on May 6th.”
