Katy’s many years of experience as a careers advisor will also give an experienced voice in parliament to help fix the problem of unemployment in Scotland.

Katy and the Lib Dem team have spent years campaigning on local issues such as fighting the “Go Ape” plans in Pollok Park, saving post offices, the campaign to save Otago Lane, as well as the fight to stop schools being closed by the city council. Katy will be a hard working voice for the people of Glasgow in the Scottish parliament!

Willie Croft Head of Regeneration, Cube Housing Association, explained their Combined Heating & Power scheme, which should start construction this summer.  The CHP scheme is designed to significantly reduce the energy bills for Wyndford residents, while also playing its part in combatting climate change.  Tavish, Katy, Sophie & Willie then climbed to the top of one of the tower blocks to view the solar panels on the roof.  These panels are already contributing to reducing energy costs for Wyndford residents.

The CHP scheme  at Wyndford should save over 7,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year when it is completed.

Katy commented:

“This is exactly the type of project we want to encourage.  It combines reduction in heating bills with reducing carbon emissions.  Our Lib Dem plans strongly focus on reducing fuel poverty, supporting the expansion of renewable energy and creating jobs in the green economy.  This project combines all 3 and I congratulate Cube on being at the forefront of the green energy revolution whilst at the same time working hard to reduce their tenants’ fuel bills.”

In January, Katy took part in a debate at the Glasgow University Union on the Alternative Vote Referendum.  Katy and Glasgow University Lib Dem Society President, and candidate for Maryhill Springburn Sophie Bridger, argued in favour of the change to a fairer voting system, while representatives from the Conservatives opposed.  We were happy to see that Katy and the argument in favour of reform won the vote convincingly at the end of the debate!

Katy commented afterwards:

“A fairer voting system is a no brainer for me.  First Past the Post may have worked in the last century when there were only 2 main parties but it’s time has gone.  People are fed up with not being heard.  The AV referendum gives them a voice.  For the first time in a General Election, every vote would count, MPs would have to work harder to gain people’s support and safe seats would become a thing of the past across much of the country.  I believe the British people’s sense of fairness will ensure that this referendum is won and a fairer voting system introduced.”

Katy recently attended the Glasgow Pride celebrations in George Square. Katy said:

I was glad to show my support to the Glasgow Pride. The Lib Dems have campaigned in support of LGBT issues, and it was fantastic to attend this vibrant and popular event.

Last weekend, Katy was invited to the official reception at the Friends of Old Station Park (FOSP) Gala day in Hyndland. The Chair of Hyndland Residents’ Association, Neil Johnston, highlighted the huge progress that’s been made in the last year, and that the money is now secured for Stage 1 of the project.
Katy said:

“I would like to congratulate FOSP for their achievements in the past year. Their hard work and commitment has really paid off, and I look forward to seeing the completion of Stage 1, in 2011.”

On another glorious June day, Katy opened the Friends of the River Kelvin (FORK) Gala, which  marks the traditional start to the West End Festival. This year the Gala was record breaking, with more stalls than ever before! In her speech Katy highlighted the importance of communities acting together to achieve results that benefit everyone.
Katy said:

“I was delighted to have been asked for the third year running to open the Gala day. Local organisations like FORK do a huge amount of work to improve the local area. It’s been heartening to see people rallying around a similar cause in the Save Otago Lane campaign. I hope the council will listen to the huge number of voices raised in protest.”

The developers have now submitted their plans to build 142 flats in 8 storey blocks along Otago Lane in the West End of Glasgow, effectively destroying the character of the lane and going against the council’s own City Plan.
We have already delivered around 700 letters of objection to the council – you can read about it in the Evening Times and the Herald.
If you haven’t written a letter of objection yet, please go to the Save Otago Lane website and follow the instructions to send in a letter of objection.  It is really important that you include the reasons why you are objecting – these must relate to the planning application.
It won’t take you more than 20 minutes to write a letter and you can even e mail it in to the council.  So please help us ensure that a little corner of a not so foreign field stays unspoiled.
