Scottish Lib Dems stand up to fascists in Glasgow

Katy, along with Robert Brown MSP and fellow Lib Dems rallied at Nelson’s Column on Glasgow Green on Saturday to protest at the Scottish Defence League (a little known far right organisation)’s plans to march on the Central Mosque in Glasgow. Along with nearly 3,000 others, they heard speakers from all political parties, the trades unions and faith organisations denounce the league and pledge to stand united to defend Glasgow from racist and fascist attempts to bring their ugly brand of politics to the city. Speaking after the march to George Square, Katy said:
“This is a time for all Glaswegians to stand up and be counted in defence of the city. There is no place for racists and fascists in Glasgow, Scotland or the UK and we must unite to oppose them. But we must not forget that the best way to defeat such people in the long term is to tackle the root causes of discontent that allow such organisations to flourish, rather than pandering to right wing prejudices and upping the ante on immigration.
We need to ensure that all Glasgwegians have access to decent homes, jobs that pay above the minimum wage and above all hope in a better future. The Liberal Democrats can offer this hope and we have proved, in Burnley and other places, that where we take on the BNP or other right wing organisations, we defeat them.”
