Katy speaks at a Gaza Protest Rally in Glasgow

Katy joined protesters at a rally in George Square to protest over the ongoing suffering of the people of the Gaza strip. As one of the invited speakers who addressed the crowd, Katy backed Lib Dem party leader, Nick Clegg’s call for an end to arms exports to Israel, for an investigation into whether war crimes have been commited during the recent conflict and for the European Union to recognise that withdrawing their prescence on the border between Egypt and Gaza had not helped the situation.

Katy also criticised the BBC for refusing to broadcast the appeal for aid to Gaza, saying:

“I fully support the motion Lib Dem MSP Hugh O’Donnell tabled in the Scottish Parliament this weekend, condemning the BBC’s action. Surely humanitarian tragedy outweighs the somewhat legalistic view of what constitutes impartiality. We all want an impartial BBC, but I can’t see how broadcasting an appeal, supported by the Disasters Emergency Committee, would contravene the BBC’s guidelines. They should think again. We should be doing all we can to help the people of Gaza, and indeed Israel if they need it, to start to rebuild their lives after the awful suffering inflicted over the past months by bombs and rockets.”

  • Overheard
If you were invited, why did you say you were standing in for Hugh O'Donnell?
  • Gill: I think it will bring more attention to the appeal - people will be more aware of the issue (if they aren't already well aware of it).
  • Well said Katy! I'm glad you managed to pull the speech off, and I hope it was well received!
  • do you think the furore over the bbc's refusal to cover the appeal is bringing more attention to the appeal or do you think it's damaging to the appeal?
  • You are great
  • Good stuff!
