Rally: Scotland United Against Terror
Monday, July 9th | by Katy Gordon Comments
Katy and fellow Lib Dems joined several hundred people from all sections of the community at a rally in George Square today. The goal was to show that Scotland stands united against the terrorism which has so recently come to the city, in the shape of the attempted suicide bombing of Glasgow airport. As speaker after speaker pointed out, today was important in showing that no one community should be singled out and all citizens have a responsibility to let the police know if they see or hear anything suspicious. Katy commented:
“I was proud of the bravery of members of the public at Glasgow airport this week in coming to the aid of the police. The police across the country have worked with impressive speed to round up other members of what appears to have been a terrorist cell, but they couldn’t have done this without support from the public. This includes members of the Muslim community, whom we should not forget are just as vulnerable in these attacks as anyone. That is why I condemn utterly the actions of a mindless few who have carried out racist attacks on ethnic minorities this week, in apparent response to the failed bomb attempts. We need to say loudly and often that Muslim citizens are as law abiding as as the rest of the community. The actions of a small number of extreme fundamentalists does not mean that all Muslims are suspect any more than the Ku Klux Klan in America means that all white Americans are racist. We need to keep a sense of proportion, helped by speakers as we have heard today stressing that Islam and the words of the Koran do not justify such violent atrocities.”
