Heated Debate as World Warms Up

MSP Environmental Hustings at Hillhead Library in Glasgow Kelvin

Passions ran high amongst West End residents attending the Environment Hustings at Hillhead Library on Wednesday. With a full panel of 9 candidates, the 50 people attending were confronted with total agreement from panelists on the seriousness of global warming, but stark contrasts in their prescriptions for how to tackle it.

Katy clearly set out the Liberal Democrat’s plans to ensure 100% of Scotland’s electricity comes from renewable resources by 2050, that recycling rates should achieve 70% by 2020 and that the focus should shift to locally generated energy, with a micro-power revolution.

She also highlighted the favourable comments of both Friends of the Earth and the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) on the party’s manifesto and Nicol Stephen’s recent award as Green Politician of the Year. Friends of the Earth said the Liberal Democrats have the greenest mainstream manifesto, while WWF confirmed that the Liberal Democrats’ plans have the smallest ecological footprint of the main parties.
