Katy welcomed Scottish Liberal Democrat leader and Depute First Minister Nicol Stephen to Strathclyde University, in the heart of Kelvin constituency, today. He was visiting the Engineering Department to hear about the ground breaking research and development into renewable energy technology. With both the BBC, STV and various newspapers in attendance, he toured the department along with Katy and with Robert Brown, the Glasgow based Lib. Dem. Depute Education Minister.
The tour later moved on to the Glasgow Science Centre, where Nicol talked to staff and visiting school pupils about the centre’s programme of events to get young people excited by science. Katy commented:
“There is some really exciting work being done at Strathclyde Uni. As Enterprise Minister Nicol has strongly encouraged the growth of the renewables industry. The university has been working in partnership with Scottish Enterprise to develop their research. We need to support this kind of work if we are to reach our target of 100% electricity from renewable sources by 2050.
My colleagues at Careers Scotland have been working closely with the Science Centre to take groups of school pupils and teachers for visits to show young people how science matters. We want to encourage more pupils to take science subjects at school and university. We need to build on Scotland’s world class reputation in engineering to nurture the Scottish scientists and engineers of the future.”
