Hands Off Glasgow’s Museums, Libraries, Sports & Community Facilities

Campaigning in the West End

Katy was out campaigning with the local Lib Dem council candidates today in Byres Road. They were seeking signatures to the party’s petition against the Labour City Council’s plan to hand over management of council facilities to an independent company. Shoppers in Byres Road were overwhelmingly against the transfer, if signatures to the petition were anything to go by.

Katy is strongly supporting the Liberal Democrat council group in the fight to stop Labour’s proposals. Jordanhill councillor, Baillie Christopher Mason, the leader of the Lib Dem group, said:

“The fight goes on. Labour councillors on the Executive Committee nodded through this scheme on Friday afternoon (2nd Feb). On the Saturday morning, Liberal Democrats were out in Shawlands collecting signatures for a petition to ask the Council not to proceed. We shall extend this campaign to every part of Glasgow. Stephen Purcell, the new Labour leader, has no mandate for this change as he has deliberately decided not to consult the people of Glasgow. We aim to make it as difficult as possible for him to complete the change before the council election on 3 May, so that voters can decide then what is to be done.”

Katy and the Glasgow Kelvin team extended last Saturday’s action to the West End today, gathering signatures from local residents on Byres Road. Local Kelvindale councillor Mary Paris will lead another Lib Dem team in the campaign at Partick Farmers Market on 24th Feb. Katy stated

“These services belong to the people of Glasgow. It is outrageous that the Labour councillors want to deny citizens any say in this blatent attempt to take local facilities out of democratic control. The public should be aware that the way to stop this happening is to sign our petition, write to their MSPs and councillors and vote against Labour on 3rd May!”
