Islam Awareness Week

Katy Gordon and Ann Laird, council candidate for Anderston City, accepted an invitation to attend the Knowing Our Neighbours dinner at the Glasgow Central Mosque on Friday (24th Nov 06). This was the highlight of Islam Awareness Week, an week long programme of activities designed to raise awareness and remove misconceptions about Britain’s second largest faith group.

Katy and Ann enjoyed an excellent meal, a tour of the mosque and the chance to meet members of the Muslim community in Glasgow.

Commenting on the evening, Katy said:

“I welcome the efforts of Glasgow’s Islamic community to reach out to local residents. Seeing the mix of people attending the event was a heartening sign that many Glaswegians were pleased to get the chance to find out more about what goes on at the mosque throughout the year.

It is very easy, in the climate of fear whipped up by Tony Blair’s ‘war on terror’ and misguided invasion of Iraq, to condemn all Muslims as fanatics. Events such as these are important to show that the vast majority of Muslims are keen to educate, participate and integrate.”
